Essetai looked sadly after Akihiko. He looked so upset. Venturing forth she caught up and walked beside him with a hand on his mane. "What's wrong Hiko? I thought you wanted to find a new herd of your own? Isn't that right?"
"Oh no, Essetai is on animal mode. Everyone prepare for lectures," Kento groaned.

As far as I'm aware, some vegetation does grow in the snow... It's only rumours though

"Well I guess the herbivores in Hoku have to live off something. " Des said. " Would the snow that the fire melts put it out? I don't want to start fires just for them to be put out five minutes later by melted snow. Then again, when it's that cold you do what you do to stay warm."

Essetai nearly giggled. Kento was trying not to laugh as well. These two were making it sound so difficult to live up north! But why? It wasn't hard in the least... then again it may have been due to them having lived there.
"You just put a ring of stones around the fire, clear some of the softer top snow, and build up the fire on top... I believe?" Esse said at last. "No need to worry much. Thunderblizzard will have a safe place to stay when we arrive. We'll just have to make due until then."
