The wolfess finished her job and returned to her previous position to guard. She felt hungrier than she had before since Star had only spared a little meat, but she was sure she would adjust eventually. Dire wolves were known to be highly adaptable, but the pup's mother's skinny shape had suggested otherwise.

Star woke up early the next morning. She pulled some meat out of her pack, and then transformed into the exact image of the dire wolfs mother, except not quite as thin. She left the steaks lying on the ground, trotting over to where the pup was and nudging it gently with her nose.

She opened and blinked in amazement. She sniffed, sensing little difference in scent. She sniffed the meat then accepted it, eating them quickly. Mother? she asked.

Star gave a little wolf smile. Yes, dear. She knocked the meat. Am I allowed a little? she asked friendly.

She nodded and nudged some back towards Star. She gave her 'mother' a friendly lick to the muzzle. But...how are you here? You cannot be. I saw what that girl did to you.

Things are not always what they seem my dear, Star said, eating a little of the meat. You will learn that in life.

I suppose so...but what should I do? I cannot return to Canis to assist Asim. Nor do I think he is there anymore.

Maybe you should stay with the girl. As long as she thinks you are useful, she will protect you, and she won't harm you if you do what she says. I know you don't want too, but you aren't old enough to survive on your own.

She sighed. Alright... but what about Asim? He has no idea where he is going or where he is... he could be lost in Amaru. Poor guy doesn't even know what he is.

There is nothing you can do. As a spirit, I can help. I can travel easily and show him the way. But I can't protect you, so I'm leaving you in the care of Star. If you get her annoyed, then she will hurt you, so don't. I know you're quick to get angry, but you need to learn as well. She will encourage you to learn, but the same mistake twice will be horrible for you.

Again she nodded. Then I will do as you have told me. May the Wolves of the Stars protect your spirit then. Akanta erisha. Rest well.

You are so young. I'm sorry. Star said. She walked close and rubbed noses with the little wolf pup.

It is not your fault. You had to leave me when you were meant to do so. I have faith we will meet again. She smiled, rubbing noses with the larger wolf.

You have been forced to grow old to early. Remember to be young sometimes. The larger wolf padded off into the forest, dissapearing into the undergrowth. Star changed back into her human form and then into a bird, moving silently to the place where she had been sleeping, out of sight of the little wolf. She changed into her human form and pretended to be waking up for the first time.

She stretched then looked over to Star. You're awake. She said it light a fact because indeed it was, not a question.
